I believe Gilbert does gain self Awareness and self acknowledgement throughout his journey. Gilbert watched his father beat his mother and drive her crazy then, when his father got custody of him and his siblings, he beat them. All he ever known is being powerless. He starts to look up to Hitler and for all the wrong reasons but the main one is because of the power he feels Hitler commands. Gilbert states, " The more I read about Hitler the more powerful he seemed to me. I could relate to that power.
